Knife Skills

The first time I saw Knife Skills was at North 6 (now Music Hall Of Williamsburg or some shit), although I can't remember who they were playing with. Jerry Fuchs was playing drums and they sounded like Black Flag. Awesome.

I had met Anna several times previously through one Alice Cohen. We always got on well, and even tried playing music together once (it went well I thought, but we never ended up doing it again). I am still very good friends with Anna and would consider myself a well wisher.

Anna is now in the excellent These Are Powers. If you have not heard them I would highly recommend them to you.

The Knife Skills EP was later released as Get Home Safe with less songs.

The Bling Bling Blang Blang EP has a silk screened cover but the ink has been falling off. It used to be a lot more legible, but what it says should be no great mystery.

The first time I saw Extra Life it was just Charlie sitting in a chair at Silent Barn. It was awesome.

I got this CDr off him that night.

I recently ran into him on the street and as we were both at loose ends we ended up having dinner together. I had a burrito and he had some tacos. I am sure you are all very excited to learn this. I had a good time, anyway.

Love Of Diagrams

I would consider all three people in this band good friends despite the fact that they live in Melbourne, Australia. I set up their first show in New York City, which rekindled my friendship with Monika. I knew her because my old band played a show with Sea Scouts in 1999.

I went on tour with them last year for 10 days. I had spent a fair amount of time hanging out with them when they were in town (they stayed at my house more than once) but spending all that time together really solidified our friendships. Hopefully that doesn't sound too sentimental. Anyway, I shared a room with Luke and Antonia.

They all missed out on swimming at Miami Beach because they wanted to sleep in. I woke up early and spent an hour on the beach by myself. I then showered and packed and woke everyone up.

This record is awesome. I got them to play "No Way Out" for me exactly once on the tour, in Houston I think.

They had me introduce them that night and I did the most deadpan, dry delivery that I could sum up. I then twisted my ankle getting off stage. Nice!

Honeywell

I never saw Honeywell as they were a little bit before my time. I did see one of the early Volume 11 shows though. They threw out tapes, which I lent out my copy of many years ago and have never seen again. I should ask Matthew Bowne for it back but I never see him anymore.

But that is neither here nor there. I think I got this in Long Beach, although it could have been anywhere in Orange County. I have never seen another copy of this tape and there is no record of it on the internet that I can discover. There are plenty of websites offering the Honeywell discography but no mention of this.

It features a live set on KSPC, with the last two songs being home recordings. This leads me to believe it is not a bootleg (although I like the idea of Honeywell bootlegs).

Tom LoMacchio

I met Tom in the summer of 1996 and had the pleasure of seeing him several times. He had a good story about being mugged and lying to the mugger about how much money he had. I would say more but he told me the story 12 years ago. I remember hanging out extensively in San Diego, although I know we hung out in some other towns as well (I was spending the summer between my freshman and sophomore years of college at my parent's house and thus had enough time on my hands to drive all over Southern California attending punk rock shows).

I remember listening to the LP and it being one of the first times that I could actually distinguish the voice of someone I knew coming through my speakers. Up to that point the people I knew in bands were mostly of the screaming variety, whose voices are not always easily distinguished from that of other screamers. I know it sounds silly, but it was exciting to be able to associate someone's speaking voice with their singing voice. It is something I am still excited about to be honest; one of the rewarding aspects of being involved with underground music is getting to know the people in the bands that matter to you.

Sometime I believe in the year 2000 I briefly dated his sister Dana. I haven't seen her in many years but I hope she is well. Hello to both of you if you happen upon this!

I purchased the LP from him although I seem not to have it anymore (I don't recall selling it but that seems to be the most likely cause for me no longer owning it). I recently repurchased the album on compact disc because I wanted to hear it again. I will hold on to it until I find another copy of the LP.

The songs on these three records are numbered sequentially so you could really put them all together and just call the record The Deadwood Divine if you like (even if the Post Marked Stamps single does spell it "Devine"). But I will preserve the integrity of the individual releases because that is part of what I do here.

I was recently in North Carolina visiting my parents and I went to the local record store (School Kids). They didn't have any LPs I was interested but I did find some moderately priced singles that caught my eye.

I had never heard of Factual but I could tell by looking at it that it would probably be a fun record. That, combined with its price of 99 cents were enough for me to to purchase it.

I appreciate it when bands take the time to list their management and crew on their record. Perhaps I need someone to manage me in 1982!

The record is, as I suspected, comprised of two fun new wave songs. Here you go!

After listening to it I placed an internet search that informed me that it was played on the radio once or twice in the last few years and Marko Koenig owns it (why people bother to post a list of the records they own I will never know). If you know more about this band let me (and the world) know!

Cat Power

I have seen Cat Power on three separate occasions. The first time was with Smog and Guv'ner at Bottom Of The Hill in 1996. She played a solo set and was miles better than anyone else that night.

The second time was opening for Dirty Three in London in 1998. She was oddly not backed by them even though this was right after Moon Pix came out. Her band was sloppy and it wasn't really all that great. Dirty Three were transcendental.

The third (and so far, final) time was a few months later at the Starry Plough. This time she actually was backed by Dirty Three and it was fucking awesome. My (previously mentioned) friend Steve Lazar was in town from Arcata and wanted to stick around after the show to attempt to "meet" Chan Marshall. It didn't seem sensible to me but we ended up standing around for a while until it was evident that his attempts would probably be rebuffed.

This is another record that I purchased a long time ago and simply filed away without listening to it. It is much better than I expected it to be, in that it is quite good.

Mine is numbered with a Hello Kitty stamp out of 500, which leads me to believe that there aren't a lot of these.

Shaking Hands

I don't know too much about this except it features Merrick and possibly my dear old friend Steve Lazar (although he isn't credited anywhere, the writing on the CD is his and he was the one who gave it to me). Given this information I can only assume that it was a band that played the Arcata area at some point.

I do know that they are both in Starving Weirdos.

Steve gave it to me when he and Merrick came out for No Fun Fest a few years ago. I declined to attend citing "too many beards" as my reason.

Whether Steve is on this record or not I have known him since 1988. He lived a block away from me and we used to do things like play Castlevania II together. His mother was the mayor of Thousand Oaks for a while, too.

He recently was kind enough to fly to New York for my wedding. It was awesome to hang out with him and I hope I get to again before too many years go by.

This is some sort of one-off band comprised of my friend Bobby Burg (of The Love Of Everything) and his friend Chris Hansen (of Pinebender).

I have no recollection of acquiring this, but I can only assume I got it off Bobby at some point, probably at a show he was playing in Brooklyn somewhere. Whether he still lived here or not at that point is a mystery to me.

I have no idea what Palatazo is or means.

Fireball

This record is awesome. I get stoked every time I listen to it. Seriously.

I somehow failed to see this band even though I am friends with most of them. I feel like they usually played early and I couldn't make it for one reason or another. A poor excuse that I do not stand behind, I still regret not having seen them.

Lisa told me they have some unreleased tracks. I told her that I would happily release them as a gig single if they would play a reunion show.

The offer stands. Perhaps they will take me up someday.

Seductive Sprigs were short lived. I only got to see them once at Asterisk, but they were pretty killer.

I think there was a falling out with Matthew during a Zs tour which led to him leaving both Zs and Seductive Sprigs.

The Angel Assassins played with Love, Claire at some weird warehouse in Portland, OR sometime in the middle of 1997. I can't remember the name of the warehouse but it was cavernous. I got lost in it for a minute because it had so many rooms. It was the last show of the tour and wound up being my last show with the band. I might have been speaking hyperbolically when I said I got lost for a minute, but you know what I mean.

I remember quite liking Love, Claire. Jason Pruitt had booked the first show of our tour, at The O. I'm not sure why he played the second Portland show but not the first. I'm sure there was some reason.

It took me a while to figure out where the songs start and stop as the songs have starts and stops in them and bits that are hard to hear but I think after spending some time with it I got it right.

The Extra Glenns

I had the pleasure of seeing the Extra Glenns exactly once. Franklin Bruno, The Mountain Goats, and The Extra Glenns played a CMJ show at Knitting Factory in 2000. I did not have tickets or a badge so I snuck in.

I had spent most of the day wooing someone over free drinks at Luna Lounge and returned there after the show to redouble my efforts. I was not successful that evening but eventually my persistence bore fruit.

But that is another story.

The Extra Glenns were fantastic that evening. I don't think they really play anymore, which makes me all the more glad that I was able to sneak in that evening. The person watching the door was not being particularly vigilant.

The Gang

I don't know a whole lot about this band as I haven't seen them. I've heard tale of Danny Leo's involvement but I have not seen him in a few years now so I cannot question him personally. Whatever happened to The Holy Childhood?

That being said these three songs are pretty enjoyable. I looked and apparently their debut album, Zero Hits, came out recently so we (meaning myself and you if you like their side of this record) are going to have to purchase a copy sometime soon.

They were amazing. I saw them a few times, once in a basement with Men's Recovery Project, Thrones, and The Criminals (I might have mentioned this show before, but it was brilliant). Joshua was crowd surfing and was inches from the ceiling. The entire room was going nuts. Amazing.

Their LP is too long (almost as long as the name Behead The Prophet No Lord Shall Live). The songs are good but bands like this don't need to make long players. Their EP is just right. The split EP is pretty awesome too.

If you listen closely to the cassette you can hear my voice in there somewhere. If you don't know me, it might be more difficult to parse but I'll leave you to it. That is also my distortion pedal treating the guitar but that might be even harder to distinguish.

I met George at a party many years ago. He walked up to me and said "You're in The Angel Assassins, aren't you. Hi, I'm George."

George and I went on to be roommates. I believe I introduced the two of them when Gabe brought his laundry over to his house one day.

I still miss that house sometimes. We called it The Appomattox, and Gabe wrote an awesome song about it that I would love to hear again someday. All the shows we did there were super fun, including the Dub Narcotic/Black Heart Procession extravaganza. That was a wild night, indeed.

I never actually saw the band with Ceci in it as I had moved away by the time she joined. I didn't meet her until after she moved to New York.

The last track on the single wasn't named on the insert so I decided "Less Belts" was appropriate because it is the first thing shouted at them by someone who's voice I can't recognize. Stand up and be counted, whoever you are.

I haven't spoken to Gabe recently but I talk to George and Ceci all the time. If any of you are reading this, hello!

Heat

As a rule, I used to buy every record that Gravity put out. I skipped this one because I had disliked the Young Destroyers so much. I saw them play at Jabberjaw twice, opening two otherwise amazing shows (The VSS & Unwound, The VSS & Lungfish).

I decided to give this record a shot when I saw it again recently. Amoeba prices singles to move and I figured it wasn't that big of a risk.

What is the verdict? This record is okay. Not as offensive as I remember. A little off key, not terrible, not great.

Why do I share it with you? Why am I not curating this more carefully? Because this is a journey, a sonic journey if you will. If you don't feel like downloading it you don't have to. Perhaps, however, you will enjoy it more than I do. I already put in the work, I might as well see the results, right? There have been a few other clunkers too but I'm not one to pull punches or waste mp3s.

The cover is pretty cool, though.

Fuck You I'm Stealing Home

Some time ago I mentioned the evening that Alphabet Of Daggers and two other bands stayed at my house. Fuck You I'm Stealing Home was one of the other bands. It featured Dustin Hawthorne, who went on to fame in Hot Hot Heat. I had met Dustin previously in Victoria when The Angel Assassins stayed at his house. He made us spaghetti.

The night they stayed at my house we were all impressed by the fact that he could fall right asleep on the couch despite the lights being on and people making noise around him. What was more impressive was the fact that at no point was his hair and less than immaculate.

Why did bands record over old tapes instead of buying new ones? It certainly doesn't help the (already fairly shitty) audio quality. Mine is over Garth Brooks.

Camera Obscura

This is not the Glaswegian indie band that I have never listened to. This is the band from San Diego that I have. I just wanted to clear that up.

I saw Shortwave Channel exactly once at Gilman Street, which is why I was excited to see Camera Obscura when they came through New York. It was years later that I realized my friend Duane was in this band, as Casey Block was trying to find out more about hardcore and thus was listening to his friends' old bands. You should have heard him talking about Rorschach, it was hilarious.

The Vue/Camera Obscura/The Faint show at Brownies also featured Turing Machine, who were fucking amazing. Little did I know that evening that some years later I would be in a limo with Justin Chearno sitting on my lap on our way to some after hours club. What fun!

Quack Quack

Moz is one of the most relaxed, mellow dudes I have ever met. He is also super nice and fun to hang out with. I feel like I could all the time. I got to for a whilst Puttin' On The Ritz toured the United Kingdom with Chops (although not Quack Quack). It was on this tour that he introduced me to one of my favorite things, Branston Pickle.

I have a great picture of him walking through the door of Dom's house in Leeds (where Dom cooked us an amazing vegan Irish breakfast). Hey, it's Moz!

He gave these to me after the tour last year but some reason I didn't listen to them until recently. I feel like I have been telling that story a lot lately. One good thing about this project is that I am listening to a lot of different music and most of it is really, really good.

Warbler

I have known Kristy for years. She really seemed to blossom (or whatever) after she moved to San Francisco. It is exciting to see her play in bands.

Warbler are ridiculously positive. You will not be able to help but be in a good mood whilst listening to this.

It might make you want to become a cheerleader. That is how good you will feel.

The tracklist on Warbler is just silhouettes of various birds that I can't make out. If you can unlock this puzzle for me I would appreciate it.

We played with them once at Asterisk. They were fantastic but it was a little weird because we had a friend sitting in with us who forgot all the words and thus spent the entire set screaming obscenities. She ran out immediately and I never saw her again. True story.
