If you have not already done so, I would highly recommend that you purchase yourself a set of the somewhat recently reissued Oblique Strategies cards. I have found that they are applicable to almost any situation.
For some reason these songs are not really all that available. Besides these singles, they have been released on the long out of print Working Backwards (which I still kick myself for not purchasing the one time I saw it at a record store), and II: Vocal box sets.
But now, due to my somewhat tireless efforts, they are available to you.
I would also suggest reading A Year With Swollen Apendices, his diary from 1995.

Enemymine
I had the pleasure of seeing Enemymine a few times, although unfortunately never when Zak Sally was in the band. They were fantastic, however.
If you read this blog at all, then you already know that I am a huge godheadSilo fan, and it should come as no surprise that I am also a fan of Enemymine.
Both of these releases are no longer available so I am again releasing them into the wild. Please feel free, as usual, to enjoy.

Shepherds
I saw Shepherds play twice -- once at Goodbye Blue Monday and again at Silent Barn (which I believe appears here as Loco Live). I don't think they played many other shows. I was surprised when I looked and saw that before they ever played a show they had several cassettes out. I suppose when you all live together it is easy to go into the studio you have at your house and record some jam sessions.
I don't listen to them as much as Meneguar or Woods (who have gotten especially good lately), but I certainly have been known to enjoy the noise (or drone, or whatever) as of late. I certainly have a greater appreciation for it then I did a few years ago, although I'm not quite sure why. The only exception is when I am riding my bike -- for that I usually need something a bit more upbeat.
I have seen rips of these elsewhere but let me assure you that, as with everything you see posted here, I personally ripped these from my own copies. I never post other people's rips, and I never will. All the content you see here is original, even if there are other versions available elsewhere. So why not take this opportunity to upgrade your own rips? How can you go wrong with 320?

Out Hud
Out Hud were awesome. I first saw them at Punks With Presses (or whatever it was called at the time) sometime in 1999 and fell in love immediately. I had the pleasure of playing with them and seeing them on numerous occasions over the years. I am even thanked on a few of their records, because of the time their van broke down in Sacramento, and I drove my friend Gabe's minivan an hour and a half to pick them up so they could play with Sea Scouts at his warehouse in Oakland. It was totally worth it, too.
Molly was one of my only friends when I first moved to New York. I was in a few of her student films (which I have never actually seen) and she told me that I received a small amount of critical acclaim from her professor and fellow students for my performances. Perhaps I should have pursued another line of work.
As a piece of trivia, Nic once told me where the name came from. Apparently there was some commercial on, for what I imagine was a company that sold trucks, or drove trucks, or had something to do with trucks. They claimed they would out drive the competition, out sell the competition, etc. The final claim they made was that they would "out hub" the competition -- which they thought was funny (but for some reason thought hud was funnier than hub). Thus, a name was born in some convoluted way.
Ladies and gentlemen, for your listening pleasure, all the pre-Kranky material (as far as I know) by Out Hud.

Son, Ambulance
I never got into most of the bands from Omaha. I just have not been interested in that particular scene, despite the fact that several of my friends have played in bands from there.
I don't remember quite how I came to own this, it was probably handed to me on one of the occasions that I went into the Insound office. At the time I didn't have a bank account or a credit card but I did have friends who worked there, and they would allow me to come in and pay cash. As a result I got many of these tour support things for free. I don't think there were ever very many and I don't think they circulated too widely. I will continue to post the ones I have, however.

I have to admit that I purchased this cassette for the Eat Skull content on the other side. That does not mean that I am unhappy to have this as well, however.

Frisk Frugt
Last year we played a show with a band from Denmark called Kirsten Ketsjer. I didn't know what to expect, but they were amazing.

The Peppermints
I saw The Peppermints once at Starfoods in Manhattan. I cannot remember who else was playing, but it was one of the evenings in the early to mid oughts where I could be found DJing. The band seemed especially enthused by my choices, but I was pretty drunk so I cannot recall quite what they were.

The Aislers Set
I was fortunate enough to see The Aislers Set on numerous occasions, on both coasts. In fact, I attended their premiere performance at the YMCA in Berkeley. The were always a treat.
I'm not sure how much people still care about them, but I sure do. I know a lot of these record are difficult to find so this might be the first time some of you are hearing them. In fact, I only recently heard the holiday single for the first time quite recently. After searching in vain for the better part of a decade, my buddy John Chavez handed me a copy as an present. Thanks man!
As the sun has now set it is officially the first day of Hannukah and as Christmas is only a few days away, I thought I'd make a present to you of all The Aislers Set singles.

Jan Hall & The Spirits Of Change
I love these private press looking singles. There is even a little questionnare included, which is always a nice touch.
I was hoping it would be something weird, and while the bicentennial song is a little strange the record on the whole isn't as backwater as I was hoping. As far as the internet is concerned this record didn't exist, at least until now.
I do love how positive this record is. Have a good day indeed.

It took me a while to get into Satisfact. I saw them a few times I believe, I'm not quite sure why I didn't like them at first because now I think they are great. It took me a while to get into Modest Mouse too, maybe I just needed a second to understand Jeremy's drums? Who knows.

I wasn't quite sure what this record was, except that it was manufactured and distributed by Rough Trade (which is generally enough for me). Vaz
My friend Todd had Thanksgiving at his house a few years ago. People were instructed to only bring vegan food (even though no one was vegan, there were several vegetarians and no one seemed to have a problem with vegan Thanksgiving).
Jeff (who plays drums in this band -- which is why I mention it) arrived with a chicken. The funny thing is that despite him flagrantly braking the rules, people were pretty stoked and the chicken didn't last all that long.
My buddy Chris and myself made vegan mince pies. Yum!

Dan The Banjo Man
I was surprised when I put this record on and discovered that despite the image of a barefoot man smoking a pipe and playing a banjo, there is no banjo on this record. Apparently he thought his effects made his guitar "sound like" a banjo. The 70s were a pretty wild time, apparently.

Henry Tennis
I saw this band at Third Ward in Brooklyn, during the short time that Todd was doing shows there. I remember quite enjoying them. I am particular to weird bands from Japan, apparently.
For some reason later that evening they walked around the entrance to the building handing out copies of this CDr. Who can say no to that?

Sugar
I might be alone in thinking this, but Copper Blue has really stood the test of time.
I remember seeing the video for "If I Can't Change Your Mind" on 120 Minutes and totally loving it. At the age of 14 I was listening to Black Flag but hadn't checked out Hüsker Dü just yet, so this was my first experience with Bob Mould.
There were quite a few bands that I found out about through 120 Minutes. I know it seems pretty lame now, what with the internet and all, but in 1992 it was difficult for me to find out about new (or old) music. I was the older brother and none of my friends were into collecting records or checking our new bands, so it was sort of a solo mission for me for those first few years. Thousand Oaks might be a suburb of Los Angeles, but it is difficult to get into town when you don't have a drivers license and your friends aren't interested in driving for an hour to go to a record store or a show or whatever. It wasn't like there were buses you could take, and even if I could my mother would most definitely not have permitted it.
I'm sure my story is not singular. I do occasionally reminisce about the lengths one used to have to go through to find out about records and shows.
All this is to say that I was recently listening to the aforementioned debut Sugar album and thought to myself that I should do a post about them. I immediately ordered all the singles from the record (relatively cheaply) so I would have something to post. I know they are all available on the singles comp, but I like having them in the form they were originally released. Now you can too.
I did not include Changes as it has the exact same B sides as Helpless, but was released on Creation. I purchased it without realizing that. No needless clutter for you, however!

Dead Low Tide
I'm not quite sure why I didn't go see Dead Low Tide when they came through town. I habitually go see every band that Mike Kunka is in, and I was even a fan of Murder City Devils. Regardless, I missed it.
Luckily I was able to score this single not too long ago. Quite a fun one, too.
It is still no godheadSilo, however.

The How
Matt Hartman has been in plenty of good bands by this point, I will totally admit to enjoying Sic Alps and Henry's Dress and even Coachwhips.
These are some nice sides featuring him and Stewart Anderson in a band very obviously influenced by The Who. If they ever put out another record together I would probably buy that one too.
Ladies and gentlemen, for your listening pleasure, 3 sides of The How.
The How/The Aislers Set (Slumberland/555)
1. Dreaming Of Lily
Happy Matt b/w I Was A Boy (Slumberland)

2. I Was A Boy
