Camera Obscura

This is not the Glaswegian indie band that I have never listened to. This is the band from San Diego that I have. I just wanted to clear that up.

I saw Shortwave Channel exactly once at Gilman Street, which is why I was excited to see Camera Obscura when they came through New York. It was years later that I realized my friend Duane was in this band, as Casey Block was trying to find out more about hardcore and thus was listening to his friends' old bands. You should have heard him talking about Rorschach, it was hilarious.

The Vue/Camera Obscura/The Faint show at Brownies also featured Turing Machine, who were fucking amazing. Little did I know that evening that some years later I would be in a limo with Justin Chearno sitting on my lap on our way to some after hours club. What fun!

Quack Quack

Moz is one of the most relaxed, mellow dudes I have ever met. He is also super nice and fun to hang out with. I feel like I could all the time. I got to for a whilst Puttin' On The Ritz toured the United Kingdom with Chops (although not Quack Quack). It was on this tour that he introduced me to one of my favorite things, Branston Pickle.

I have a great picture of him walking through the door of Dom's house in Leeds (where Dom cooked us an amazing vegan Irish breakfast). Hey, it's Moz!

He gave these to me after the tour last year but some reason I didn't listen to them until recently. I feel like I have been telling that story a lot lately. One good thing about this project is that I am listening to a lot of different music and most of it is really, really good.

Warbler

I have known Kristy for years. She really seemed to blossom (or whatever) after she moved to San Francisco. It is exciting to see her play in bands.

Warbler are ridiculously positive. You will not be able to help but be in a good mood whilst listening to this.

It might make you want to become a cheerleader. That is how good you will feel.

The tracklist on Warbler is just silhouettes of various birds that I can't make out. If you can unlock this puzzle for me I would appreciate it.

We played with them once at Asterisk. They were fantastic but it was a little weird because we had a friend sitting in with us who forgot all the words and thus spent the entire set screaming obscenities. She ran out immediately and I never saw her again. True story.

State Route 522

The Angel Assassins played with State Route 522 in Seattle during our disastrous West Coast tour. That was one of the best shows we played however, in a basement. It was my first time in Seattle and I was blissfully unaware of the fact that my car would break down the next day.

They were great though. I haven't listened to this record in years but it certainly did bring back some memories of the mid to late 90s.

Kaleidoscope

I first got hipped to Kaleidoscope when I was working at Midnight Records. Mike played Tangerine Dream for me and I was totally blown away. I'm still blown away by it, to be honest.

We got this CD in when it came out and listened to it constantly. I particularly like "San Francisco".

Recently I was listening to them and realized that I didn't have a copy, digital or otherwise, of this record. I found it on Amazon for a few bucks and figured it was a worthwhile investment.

I know there were several Kaleidoscopes, but for my money this one was the best. Is there really any argument?

Some of the tracks are a bit rough as they are from acetates. Acetates they hadn't seen since the 60's. How does this happen? How do things like this go missing so easily? Don't people care about the past?

Service Anxiety

Cowboys & Indians played a show with Service Anxiety at Free 103. They were fantastic.

Coptic Light also played that show, long before Kevin and I had ever even considered being in a band together. Little did we know.

I have to admit that I got this record off them at the show but didn't actually listen to it until the other day. It is super good, however. Also, the packaging is pretty deluxe.

I recently heard that there was an Action Patrol reunion and I missed it. Sleepytime Trio even played! I probably wouldn't have made the trip to Virginia for it, but it sounds like it was probably a good time.

I have had the sincere pleasure of seeing Kevin play many times over the years, first in Aden and then solo.

When we first met we discovered that we were in the same film program at different schools. Thus I had read his professors and vice versa.

Of course, that was 1999.

One night I stayed up very late listening to Unpacking My Library, waiting for a telephone call from a girl. The call never came. I was, needless to say, less than pleased.

I haven't heard from Kevin in a while but I hope he is doing well.
