I don't really know much about this band other than the fact that they are on this record. If they ever released anything else, I am not privy to that information.

I am starting slow here, but I promise you will see posts for all of these bands, and not just the track on this record either. Start getting excited!

My friend Chris played (plays?) in this band. After seeing my Dead Low Tide post he informed me that he played music with Spencer Moody and threatened to mail me the evidence.

About a week later this cassette showed up in my office. I do quite appreciate it when people follow through.

Pterodactyl

The first time I really met Joe was at Silent Barn. We were both fantastically drunk and riding our bikes in roughly the same direction so we rode together. It was that night that I discovered that his day job is teaching physics to high school students. Being one that enjoys the sciences, I discovered we had much to talk about, despite the fact that the last time I studied physics was the mid 90s.

Matt Marlin on the other hand is a dude I have known around for what seems like forever. I have absolutely no recollection of how we met, he's one of those dudes (not entirely unlike myself) who is around all the time. And what a pleasure it is to have him around!

Zach Lehrhoff (or whatever it is he calls himself these days) is a subject far too deep and graphic to be discussed here. It would be better perhaps as a topic of a doctoral thesis or a book. Suffice it to say that he plays bass (and occasionally guitar) in this band.

The cover for I Can See A River scanned a little weird. The word bubble (of sorts) that is coming out of the mouth of the dinosaur looking guy is actually pink, but  for some reason my scanner decided it was more of a blue. Same with the lettering for the title. I have absolutely no idea why this is.

The Budget Girls

I was first introduced to The Budget Girls by my friend Peter at Sound & Fury. He showed me the LP cover (On A Tight Budget, indeed) and I immediately fell in love with it. If you haven't seen the cover, it has the two very attractive singers of the band nude in a bubble bath with guitars and bottles of booze. What's not to love?

If you look closely at the credits you will notice that they don't really play any of the instruments on these records, but who cares?

The Hex

I saw The Hex exactly once -- at the previously mentioned, ill fated The Den, which I believe still exists in the basement of Two Boots on Avenue A.

They were having audio trouble, so somehow I found myself running the soundboard at a show for what was the first time in my life. I had some experience as I was a video editor at the time and used a somewhat smaller board at work everyday, but I had never run live sound for anyone before. Luckily, it was a pretty small space, and thus I didn't need to do too much besides make sure the vocals were audible but not so loud that they would feedback. I was pretty successful in that venture, and I believe I purchased myself a beer or two to celebrate.

I remember the days when almost all the shows happened in Manhattan. There were definitely some rad times, but I will admit that I prefer to keep it local. I wonder if I would ever move to Manhattan, should I say strike it rich or something.

I suppose that is another one of those bridges that I will burn when I get to it.

Wavves

Recently I vacationed in Belize. It is a ridiculously beautiful country, and if you have the opportunity to go you should absolutely do so.

One of the many things you can do in Belize is visit a Mayan temple. I listened to Wavves from the top of one, whilst looking out at the forest and the river and it was pretty amazing. The title track from that record is brilliant.

Although I didn't get to listen to Beach Demon Weed Demon in Belize, I listened to it in New York and it rules.

The vinyl has a bunch of pops, probably because the sleeve is actually made of grip tape and thus is a bit heavy. I wonder how many people have actually listened to this record? I think most people these days just buy this stuff to file it away or to flip it later. Just so you know, I ordered this on 11/11/08 and received it on 1/22/09. In that time it increased in value approximately 10 fold. Nice!

Al Burian

I saw Al Burian play in a number of bands, including Hellbender and Milemarker. Although Hellbender played Goleta Fest in 1996, they were performing whilst a dude was getting his penis pierced so most of the people there were understandably distracted. I will say that if you've never seen a man have a sharp piece of metal poked through his naughty bits then you are missing out; the look on his face was worth approximately one million American dollars.

More than his music though, I am a fan of Burn Collector. I saw him read from it at Sound and Fury right after my buddy Matt put out a book compiling the first nine issues of it. During the reading, he put a question to the crowd -- "What would make you perfectly happy right now?" He had been reading for a while and being a heavy smoker at the time I chimed in with "a cigarette". At the time it was true (I did feel much better once I went outside), but when I think about it now the answer seems a bit depressing. I love being a non-smoker, I feel like it has made me more optimistic, it has given me a new outlook on life. I just used to accept the fact that I would probably die earlier than necessary because I was unwilling (and unable) to give up smoking. Now that I have quit, I want to live forever.

Full disclosure: I purchased this record less because I was interested in hearing it and more because I knew it would be a simple post. I am beginning to feel that much of the easy oil (so to speak) has been drilled, now it is getting more expensive and difficult to get it up. Of course, this means that the price per barrel keeps going up, although I'm not sure the analogy is really relevant anymore.

Oh yeah -- I once saw Al Burian get in a fist fight with someone ten years his junior at a pool party in Columbus, OH. It is not clear who started the fight and I can't remember who won, but I do remember that way more people showed up at the party than the host intended (including a bunch of local hooligans). This caused her (him? I can't remember) to kick everyone out as her (his?) parents were out of town and he was afraid that the place would get completely trashed, which probably isn't far off the mark.

The Shambles

I love that times have come around and this band looks like they could be currently lurking around Williamsburg, even though this photo is over 20 years old. I have to admit that I've been pretty stoked lately to see more dudes sporting moustaches, and they seem pretty genuine. I was a bit sad to see mine go, but I have consoled myself by growing a beard instead.

It appears as if there were some changes to the lineup at the 11th hour, as Sean Morrissey's backing vocals were taken away and Bill Mulligan's rhythm guitar (and piano) duties were given to new member Ken Safty. John Parrella's lone credit remains the drums. These changes were denoted by using a pen to cross out and write in the various additions and subtractions. I do appreciate the personal touch.

Another winner from Academy! Thanks guys!

Brenmar

I met Bill when he first moved to town from Chicago. It was his birthday and as he didn't know anybody Pat and Anna invited some of their friends to help him celebrate at Vegetarian Dim Sum House on Pell Street. It is a popular destination when people are visiting or new to town because it is exciting to order a bunch of gelatinous vegetarian goodies. The treasure balls are always a big hit -- you have to get a few orders because they tend to go fast.

He got recruited to join These Are Powers after Ted decided to pursue other interests. The story is that Brenmar played with Powers in Chicago and it was love at first sight, or something to that effect anyway.

I will say that Bill is a pretty formidable dude, so if you were thinking of messing with him you should probably think again. After listening to his solo stuff I can really see where his influence on the new Powers stuff comes in.

He has slept on my couch a number of times and I have to say is quite a pleasant houseguest. If you have the opportunity, I would recommend having him over as well.

Candle

Candle, like many bands that you and/or I have been known to enjoy featured members of Clikatat Ikatowi, Spanakorzo, Second Story Window, and probably more that I am forgetting. That is to say that they are more of a second tier band, as they never released an LP and these records have been out of print for quite some time now.

I owned them back in the day as I tended to purchase any record I saw from this particular scene. I think I might have listened to the split with Antioch Arrow exactly once sometime in the mid 90's, meaning I had no recollection of what they sounded like.

Surprisingly, they sound much like a San Diego hardcore band from this period. Who would have thought?

Jolie

This is another recent acquisition from Academy. I have been checking out releases on the internet before purchasing them, just to make sure I'm not biting off more I can chew. That is to say that I don't want to randomly buy a single by a band that released 5 of them, as then I will feel obliged to track down and post the other 4. This has been causing undue stress at Pukekos HQ, something I am trying to keep to a minimum.

Thus, I try to purchase records that the internet has never heard of.

The internet has heard of Tommy Ramone however -- who in addition to helping found The Ramones, produced this record. I have a feeling that he will probably be remembered for one more than the other.

I have to say that I picked another winner -- this record is fantastic. I would say that it sounds a little like Glass Candy but I didn't really believe it then and I certainly don't now. I think it might have been the sound of her voice that led me to believe that, however.

Kwisatz Haderach

My old friend Geoffrey handed me these records some years ago, although I don't quite remember the circumstances. I used to hang out with him a fair amount but some time has passed since our paths crossed.

I ran into Luci a few months ago and it was quite nice to catch up with her a bit after all these years. I used to have a big crush on her back in the day but nothing ever came of it. She is married to Josh Blair (of Orthrelm fame) now, if you are curious.

I haven't been listening to screamy hardcore like this so much lately so it was a bit jarring. Perhaps it is because I never really listened to these before and thus they are unfamiliar to my aging ears -- who knows. But once I got past that I quite enjoyed them. I guess a part of me will always be a hardcore kid.

There was obviously some serious nerdery going on here, as there are several Dune references as well as one to The Lord Of The Rings thrown in for good measure. I will let you figure out which is which, it isn't terribly complicated.

The Clocks

I purchased this record at Amoeba in Los Angeles about a year ago but didn't listen to it until recently. I didn't put it off for any particular reason, it just got lost in the shuffle.

If you are a fan of Monorchid but would prefer it on the rocks (or with a splash of water), perhaps this might suit your tastes.

I'm still not sure if it is appropriate to add (sic) into a song title that is clearly misspelled, as that might confuse the matter. I just want to make sure that you know that I know how to spell the word which means "in excess".

Dirt Don't Hurt

This is another old band featuring my friend Hawk Valentine (née Goad) on vocals. I believe it also featured a young Beau Beau before he started dancing in Avail (although I could be wrong about the time frame).

On the back it reads "emo ain't a bad word" (personally I would consider "ain't" to be mildly offensive, but that is neither here nor there). It is a good thing too, as this is pretty "emo", or as we used to say "em" (or occasionally even "e", for maximum brevity).

Frank Maya & The Decals

I went to Academy Records recently as (you will no doubt have noticed) I am an avid record collector. I actually had disappeared from the scene for a few years there, just occasionally buying my friends' records. Those days are long gone however, and now I find myself back in the thick of it again. Lately I have mostly been focusing my energies on singles, as it is much more likely that people overlooked them, or never get to listen to them as they were never released on compact disc. Plus, they are cheaper (sometimes) and take much less time to digitize and scan. There are plenty of worthwhile bands that never released an album.

Through the course of rummaging through old singles I have been finding stuff that I never heard of but looks interesting. I usually try to limit myself to spending a few bucks on something, but if it looks interesting enough, I might be tempted to spend more.

Luckily this one was only a few bucks. I say luckily merely because I do not have cash reserves waiting should I stumble upon some amazingly rare and obscenely priced record, not because the record isn't any good. Quite the opposite in fact -- this record is great. I don't know much about powerpop rarities but I know a good record when I hear one.

The moral of the story is -- if you go to Academy, you can probably find some great records you never heard of for a few bucks. Also, to quote a movie I have been known to enjoy -- don't do crack kid, it's a ghetto drug. I'm not quite sure how that applies, but I'm sure you can figure something out.

I looked and it would appear that the last time I saw Los Cincos (as far as I can recall) was in 1997, with Nuzzle and Godzik pink (and Lux Vanitas, if memory serves) at Chateau in Berkeley. Thus, I never got to see them perform as The Syncopation.

It really isn't all that different from the Los Cincos stuff, so if you like that you will probably like this as well. I suppose that time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping into the future...

Black Dice

The first time I saw Black Dice was at Punks with Presses in Oakland (apparently on January 3rd, 1999 -- almost exactly a decade ago). When I met Eric later and spoke to him of it he referred to that particular night as the "danger show". This was during their confrontation period, and the punks in Oakland were having none of it. I believe I witnessed a bottle of anti-freeze being hurled at Bjorn, striking him square in the head.

There was a time when Black Dice was the hot shit in town. I went to every show they played. You can see me in a few (somewhat) famous pictures taken by Señor Jeff Winterberg from the show they played with Erase Errata at The Den (the basement to Two Boots on Avenue A, where they had a few amazing shows in the year 2000) in his awesome book, Rat A Tat Tat Birds. I am proud to say that my good friend Justin Bastow also attended that show, but he didn't make any of the photos as he was standing in the back. He generally is not a fan of this sort of music, but even he found some of the dissonance and feedback frequencies "interesting". I was just happy that he found something to like.

Black Dice were especially fun to see for a time as people came to their shows who didn't actually like them, probably because it was a fashionable place to be. It was hilarious to see the place start to clear out when they began, and to see the looks on peoples' faces as they were exiting. Gold!

I used to see these dudes more frequently, but as I do not I will take this opportunity to send well wishes to Aaron (whom I actually met in 1997 when The Angel Assassins played with T Tauri), Bjorn, and Eric. Although Hisham no longer plays in the band, he played on these records and as he is my buddy I would also like to extend a hearty hello to him as well!

Belt Buckle

A record that people are mostly interested in because Lou Barlow played on it. The man is nothing if not prolific.

That being said, this record probably isn't going to blow your mind. After he wrote songs for Sebadoh, Sentridoh and The Folk Implosion (good thing he wasn't still contributing to Deep Wound or Dinosaur Jr.) he decided these gems would be perfect for a one-off side project.

I used to own this record many moons ago but sold it for reasons that are lost to time (probably to buy more records). I recently picked it up again at a record store in Durham, NC. What fun!

One Eyed Richard & The Goddamn Liars

I'm not quite sure of the lineage here, in regards to how long after Honeywell this band formed or how long it was before they changed their name to Los Cincos. Long enough to put out a record, apparently.

I get sort of nostalgic for this era, as it was when I first starting going to shows. Unfortunately they did not perform at any of those shows; I would not see them until they were called Los Cincos. I have particularly fond memories of going to Jabberjaw during that time. It was pretty exciting to be 17 and driving down to see Unwound or The VSS or Sleater-Kinney or whoever. I think my favorite show there was godheadSilo, Karp, and Nuzzle. Those were the days!

I was introduced to this record by my buddy Mike when we were working at the ill fated Midnight Records together. We got something like ten copies in, all white label promos, as an old record store brought in a bunch of their unsold records for us to try to unload. There were quite a few gems in there too, all priced as they had been ten years previous.
