Baby Blue

Look at the cover. How could I not buy this record?

I know absolutely nothing about it, and you probably have never heard of it either. Unless that is you on the cover, that is.

How many of these do you think there are? I would guess not many. But now the world can hear it!

Tennis Shoes

I recently spent a day in London wandering around in the rain going to as many record shops as I could find. I purchased quite a few records, some by bands I had heard of and many by bands I had not.

There were some rules governing which records I could buy and which I couldn't. To buy a record I had to be reasonably sure I would post it here at some point, and it had to be less than £10 (preferably closer to 5). If I hadn't heard of the band it had to look cool (obviously) and not be on a major label.

I got some oddballs, this not being the weirdest of the bunch. I love that their band is called Tennis Shoes and there are 9(!) members. I'm sure they needed every single one of the six people who are credited with vocals (for 3 of them it is their sole credit).

It says on the cover that there is a "free zoetrope inside" but as mine didn't contain one I concluded that they had intended that to be the title of the record.

This record is really fun to listen to, I am currently doing the medium wave (whatever that means).

Fighter D

I bet you were wondering if I was ever going to give you the flip side of this record. Wonder no more.

I had a feeling I saw them play at some point but I have absolutely no idea now when or where or it was. It is safe to assume that it was somewhere in the vicinity of San Francisco.

This year I started keeping a record of every show I go to. I wish I did the same thing in 1998 too so I could refer to it now.

Armatron

I heard that Armatron played a show in San Francisco and threw a bunch of worms all over the place. Not the computer kind either.

My friends who set up the show were not amused when they had to clean it up at the end of the night.

For one reason or another I never purchased their 7", but I have all these comp tracks burning a hole in my pocket. At some point I'll drop a few bucks and you'll get a few extra tunes.

Oh man do I love this record. I listened to it pretty regularly during the summer of 2005 and still bump it now and again. It usually puts me in a good mood when I do.

Missy X

If you've been keeping up with me then you already know that I cannot get enough of the Slampt catalog. Sooner or later I will track down a copy of all the releases and share them with you.

I wish there were more information available about bands like this. I didn't live in England so I never really had the chance to see them.

Maybe you did and know more? Perhaps there is some Missy X cassette you want to mail me so I can add it to this post? Who knows!

The Crainium

It would appear that yet another milestone has been reached, as this is my 200th post. I am going to celebrate by sharing The Crainium discography with you.

I never got to see them, unfortunately. I heard something about them playing in San Francisco but I didn't hear about it until the next day. It was reputedly with Crom-Tech, another band I missed out on seeing. Damn it!

When I worked at Merrill Lynch I used to listen to A New Music For A New Kitchen to annihilate the corporate weirdness that surrounded me. It was usually pretty effective.

24K Gold

I played very briefly in a band with Mike and Keith called The Dimlocator, which then turned into PS Burn This Letter after I was evicted (there were no hard feelings).

The three of us worked at Epicenter together. One day before our shift, Keith suggested we go to Jay's Cheesesteak. I was dubious as it didn't sound particularly friendly to vegetarians, which is when he informed of their seitan sandwich. It very quickly became my favorite place to eat in San Francisco. I still stop by there whenever I am in town.

One day, many years later, I was visiting San Francisco and I showed up at some show in a park that they happened to be playing. It was nice to catch up.

The Lines

This record was not particularly well cared for as there is a seam split at the bottom and quite a bit of surface noise to boot.  I suppose it was released nearly 30 years ago now. It seems so strange, I feel like records from that era should still be teenagers -- I guess I'm getting old! Imagine if I were actually in this band!

Teen Crud Combo

Long before I ever heard Teen Crud Combo, my good friend Erin McDermott used to email me the lyrics for no apparent reason. She was having some sort of relationship (I will leave which sort up to you to figure out) with Nick Flanagan (who I didn't meet until a few years later when he stayed with me for a night) and thought that I might enjoy his lyrics. I did and do.

Nick looks less like me than people say, although I haven't heard it in a while. The last time we were in a room together was not all that recent, however.

I was able to dig in my email and find the following lyrics for you:

SUCK IT:
If be ugly-young-dimwitted before Nick good
ask for beer it to be buying nick can, will and should
much not sexy but promiscuous-bonus points
you veterans of sex having after smoking joints
girl did tug on dong
dong became half long

girl who did take part in handjob
partially deformed
sloppy white trash skanks
in tubes tops and capris
girls so nasty their gross snatches
scare away the fleas(repeat verse)
girl did open legs

yeah yeah yeah

BEAVER COUNTY:

I met Jessy when she first moved to San Francisco. She was living with Mike Kirsch which we all found amusing for some reason.

We played music together for a bit, but nothing ever really came of it. I can't remember why, but these things happen.

She went on to be in Subtonix and is currently in Magick Daggers. I was out of town when they came through a few months ago so I missed them. Next time I suppose.

Countdown To Oblivion

They hail from The Provinces. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Canada and its people, although I can't really say why.

I think it might be because I was such a big hockey fan growing up. I always thought I'd more to Toronto or something someday.

Needless to say I did not ever make that move, but I will say that I wish I had more Canadians in my life. I hung out with one the other night and it was quite the time!

The Court & Spark

I used to be pretty good friends with these guys back when I lived in California. We initially sort of met when The Angel Assassins played in Isla Vista with a band that went on to become The Court & Spark.

The party in Isla Vista featured a keg of root beer. When the cops came to break up the party, a kid with a mohawk jumped in the police car and drove off with it. I don't know what happened to that kid, but I sure as shit salute him.

One time when they played New York they were hanging out with their friend who for some reason was roommates with Milla Jovovich, so we all ended up back there hanging out. Unfortunately she was out of town at the time so I did not get to meet her.

Scott handed me this cassette one night at Bottom Of The Hill, a while before the record actually came out. I used to listen to it all the time, and I love the handmade cover.

I haven't seen James or Scott in ages! If you know them please say hello for me!!

There doesn't appear to be much information on this mysterious band, but I do like the cut of their jib.
